ShillMed provides weekly education sessions via online webinars to encourage patients to build skills and mindsets that will propel them forward on the path to making long-term changes to their physical health and well-being.
Tonight our discussion was all about learning and practicing strong communication skills, and why those skills are essential for our success as we strive to make difficult changes in our lives and achieve new health goals.
Three points we covered in tonight's session are:
Good communication begins with an honest evaluation of our ability to send strong messages without distortion from emotions or feelings, and develop the emotional maturity to perceive intent in the messages we receive from others.
Using "I" statements instead of "You" statements removes shame a
nd blame from our messages, shows the listener we are willing to take responsibility for our feelings and actions, and builds opportunities for collaboration and further communication.
Understanding the difference and implementation of empathetic assertion and assertive confrontation strengthens our ability to express our needs in honest, respectful and understanding language that lends to mutual understanding and respect.
